General Information

Firearm

Must be reliable and functioning properly and safely.  The gun must fit your hand as you will be shooting many rounds and fatigue becomes a factor with poorly fitted firearms.  WFA strongly suggests nothing smaller than a .38 caliber handgun for defensive classes.  A spare firearm is suggested if possible.  Ammo requirements are a minimum.  Smaller classes tend to shoot more ammo than a full class.

Ammunition

Absolutely no reloads, factory ammo only.  WFA recommends test firing ammo prior to class to ensure reliability.

Magazines and Speed Loaders

For defensive or tactical class a minimum of two extra magazines, for a total of three, are recommended. The drills you will perform will require these additional mags. For revolvers it is recommended that you have two speed loaders. The mags or loaders must function properly and you should test them with your firearm and ammunition for compatibility.

Holster and Related Equipment
Holster must be held in position with a belt through the belt loops of pants and allow you to re-holster without opening it up with your weak hand. In other words the holster should not collapse when the gun is withdrawn. No clip on holsters. Strong side holsters only. No cross draw or shoulder holsters. Holster should hold gun securely so that it will not fall out if you are running or moving but we do not recommend retention straps or retaining devices unless they are required as part of your duty gear. You want to train with the holster that you will use when carrying. You should have pouches for magazines or speed loaders to be carried on your weak side. Holster, belt, and pouches should be comfortable and fit you.

Flashlights
For Tactical courses and low light drills you will need a flashlight with a push button or "pressure" on/off switch. It must have one-handed operation. The most popular choices are the Surefire and Streamlight brands- available in several styles

Elbow and Knee Pads
For courses requiring elbow and knee pads there are several types available. Tactical equipment is available from many sources, plus hardware stores usually have pads in stock.

Clothing
Hat or cap to prevent sun burn and avoid hot brass from burning you. We recommend a shirt with high collar and long sleeves to prevent brass from falling in your shirt. Rain gear is suggested because we do not stop for rain. Your shoes should be comfortable and allow you to move without slipping.  Pants should have pockets and must have belt loops for you holster belt. Loose pants will allow more freedom of movement. Sweat pants, slacks, and shorts are not recommended. All clothing should allow you to move freely and must be practical. Do not wear clothing that you fear to damage.

Misc.
A range bag for your equipment will help. You should bring drinks and refreshments. You will need plenty of fluids. Sunscreen, chapstick for lips, and bandaids are suggested. For day classes there is a one hour lunch break and fast food within driving distance.

You are responsible for bringing all the equipment you will require. It is up to you to ensure that it is all functioning properly. There is nothing worse than not getting the fullest out of the class because of malfunctioning or missing equipment. All equipment must be functioning properly and safely-there are no exceptions. Again it is highly recommended that you bring a spare weapon and extra ammunition.
